Drawn in full pen-and-ink — the dense crosshatch, the blown-out stage light, the
scattered picks — a girl steps out in front of a hollow varsity 86 like a number
stitched on a borrowed jersey. Teased and backcombed hair filling the frame. Studded
leather. Fishnets. Eyes cut sideways at you from under a full inch of liner, which was
the entire point and everybody knew it.

A tribute to 1986 and the women who owned it — drawn in the spirit of
Susanna Hoffs and the Walk Like an Egyptian era of MTV, when a look
across a camera lens could run a whole decade. This is an original illustration, not a
photograph of anyone: an archetype of the year rather than a portrait of a person.

It reads two ways on purpose. To anyone under forty it’s a jersey number. To everybody
else it’s a year, and they’ll know exactly which one.

Printed heavy on the chest so it carries across a room — the hollow numerals and every
gap between the strokes are the shirt itself showing through, the way a real screen print
works.
